LPS Students Headed to State Spelling Bee

Littleton Public Schools will be well represented at the 2016 State Spelling Bee on March 12th at the University of Denver. Representatives from Euclid Middle School, Littleton Preparatory, Newton Middle School and Powell Middle School will go head-to-head with the state’s top young spellers in the annual competition.

The district competition challenged students with words like “polyandrium” and “panache,” but after nine spirited rounds, it all came down to the winning words “serendipitous” and “surveillance.” Advancing to the State Spelling Bee, the district winner and runners-up will face even more challenging words at the March 12 competition.

Amber Kou, a 7th grader from Powell Middle School, was this year’s district winner. Kou is no stranger to the pressure of competitive spelling; this will be her third year competing at the State Spelling Bee and her second year representing LPS as the District Winner. District Runners-Up will join Kou at the State championship, including: Henry Mansfield, Euclid Middle School, Emma Haynes, Littleton Preparatory, and Stacia Fritz, Newton Middle School.

LPS congratulates all participants of the 2016 District Spelling Bee and wishes the best of luck to the group of students heading to the State Spelling Bee! The District Spelling Bee was made possible thanks to the Gifted and Talented Facilitators/Spelling Bee coaches, judges Darcy Johnson, Cindy Graybeal and Amber Rodgers, as well as the staff at Powell Middle School and Littleton High School Principal Dr. Amy Oaks who served as the pronouncer.
