LPS Temporary Online Program for Students (TOPS) Information and Registration

Dear Littleton Public Schools Parents:

As was announced on Friday, July 17, LPS has delayed the start of school to August 24, 2020. This delay helps us better prepare for in-person learning with public health and safety measures in place.

The return to in-person learning is good for our children academically, socially, and emotionally. The decision was not taken lightly and was based on research, recommendations of health officials, the findings and work of the LPS Restart Task Force, and the plans of other school districts locally and across the nation. Visit the Restart LPS 20-21 page for up-to-date details about the return to in-person learning.

TOPS - Temporary Online Program for Students
LPS will provide a fully online school program for K-12 and Transition Services students during the 2020-2021 school year as an alternative to attending school in-person.

  • This is a separate, virtual program that is not connected to the student’s in-person school of enrollment but is staffed essentially by licensed teachers from LPS schools.
  • TOPS is primarily intended for students who are either health-compromised and COVID-vulnerable or who have family members who are. It is also available to families who simply do not feel comfortable sending their students back to in-person school at this time.
  • There are specific guidelines and timeframes outlining when students can return to their in-person school of enrollment for in-person learning.
  • Students will interact with their TOPS teacher(s) for instruction most days via video conferencing.
  • TOPS will keep students on track academically, but it will not provide all classes or programming available to LPS students who attend school in-person.
  • Course catalogs will be published no later than mid-August.
  • Families should consider the social and emotional impact on their child, the student’s desire and ability to do online learning, and the availability of adults to help and support the student at home.
  • Students in TOPS will be able to participate in before- and after-school extracurricular activities at their in-person school of enrollment.
  • Students in TOPS will not be able to participate in any in-person classes at their in-person school of enrollment during the school day.
  • The TOPS program begins August 31.

If you haven’t already, please complete the Annual Family Check-In for ALL of your children in LPS. (*Click here for screenshots of this process.)

This is completed in the Parent Portal of Infinite Campus.

Completing the Annual Family Check-In connects your students to their in-person school of enrollment for the 2020-2021 school year, even if they will attend TOPS. This is important for communication purposes between all families and their in-person school of enrollment. Also, please be sure to update your contact preferences and contact information to ensure that you receive communications from LPS and your children’s schools and programs. (If you already completed the Annual Family Check-In, your student is connected to their in-person school of enrollment and you are finished. Thank you!)

We understand that these are extraordinary times and, as always, LPS is committed to providing a high-quality, rigorous, and engaging learning experience while also considering the social and emotional needs of every student. Thank you for your continued support and partnership as we move forward in the 2020-2021 school year.

Sincerely,

Dr. Tera Helmon
Assistant Superintendent of Learning Services
