National Move to School Day is an opportunity to encourage students of all abilities to bike, walk, or roll to school. This event highlights pedestrian and bike safety, promotes physical activity, and supports building a sense of community while reducing traffic congestion.
Some of the best ways to increase the safety of a child’s walking or rolling trip to school are to:
- Walk together. Younger children should walk with an adult or older sibling while older students are encouraged to walk with friends.
- Plan a safe route and practice it. Did you know that LPS schools have drop-off and pick-up maps on their website highlighting the flow of traffic? LPS also participates in School Pool as part of our grant with Safe Routes to School. Families can use this tool to connect with other families interested in biking together, walking together, or carpooling to school. You can learn more about this by logging into your Parent Portal on Infinite Campus.
- Utilize designated crosswalks to ensure visibility and safety when crossing the street.
- Learn the ABCs of bike safety with bikeleague.org’s video on bike checks and safety.
- Make sure helmets fit well using this video resource published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
- Lock up your bike or scooter to prevent theft.
