The Euclid Middle School choir took to the stage this year for a performance unlike any other–singing a song they helped bring to life. Titled Magical Flower Tree, this original choral piece was commissioned through the non-profit organization Sing Me A Story, which pairs young authors with composers to turn stories into songs.
The project began with a cold email from Sing Me A Story and blossomed into something extraordinary. The choir worked closely with composer Leah Tracy to bring to life the heartfelt story of–and written by–a young girl named Aubri. Aubri’s tale was inspired by memories of her late grandmother’s garden. From the first workshop to the final performance in November, students were immersed in a professional-level music experience that helped them connect emotionally and creatively like never before.
For many students, this was their first experience working on a commissioned piece. “It made us feel mature, like real professionals,” one student shared. “Leah’s feedback and encouragement meant a lot.” But the most powerful moment came when Aubri and her family attended the concert, hearing the song for the very first time. When Aubri shared her story on stage, the auditorium fell completely silent–a rare moment of reflection and emotion from a crowd of middle schoolers.
Teachers and families alike noticed the impact. The choir director, Emily Alexander, noted, “This experience was deeply personal. Students kept referencing this performance as the highlight of their year. There have been other rewarding songs, but none matched the emotional investment of Magical Flower Tree.”
This unforgettable project was a rare and meaningful opportunity–one that students will carry with them long after the performance’s final notes faded away.
