Students can expect a more normal school experience this fall

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) released updated guidance for schools on July 20, 2021. The CDPHE recommends that schools take a layered approach of best practices and continue to monitor the health and wellness of students, employees, and the communities we serve. Decisions about the learning environment are left to individual school districts to determine.

Our own data tells us that a layered approach is appropriate for LPS. About 700 students in preschool through grade 12 attended LPS summer school programs throughout June, and masks were optional for both vaccinated and unvaccinated students and employees. We are happy to say that during that time, only two COVID-positive cases were reported in our schools. Our layered health strategies -- cleaning, disinfecting, increased air ventilation, hand washing, and physical distancing to the best of our ability within a regular learning environment -- work.

Details regarding what students, parents and employees can expect when the school year begins will be shared soon. We ask for your continued patience and flexibility as we do our very best to balance a return to a more normal schedule with keeping our students and employees healthy. We will continue to work closely with local health officials throughout the fall, and we will continue to update you regularly.

Students, staff, parents and community members must continue to work together every day to help us maintain a more normal school experience for all students. Thank you for your ongoing support!
