Dear LPS families and community members:

Earlier today, several area school superintendents, including myself, made the collective decision to keep our schools closed to in-person learning for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. The key factor leading to this decision is guidance from county health officials that the impact of COVID-19 is likely to peak during the last week of April. We also know that the virus will continue to pose a significant threat for an unknown period of time after it peaks. That means it is no longer possible to return to school yet this spring.

Joint Superintendents’ Letter

On Wednesday, Governor Polis announced that schools would remain closed through the end of April. However, we superintendents believe that finishing this school year through remote learning is one of the most effective ways in which we can do our part to avoid exposing anyone to unnecessary risk and provide stability for learning. This decision also gives our families some certainty about the rest of the school year, knowing there will not be specific answers to exactly how and when we will return to “life as normal.”

LPS Distance Learning will continue for the rest of the school year. Our teachers and school leaders will continue to provide quality content for your children. We will get better at distance learning with each passing day. It’s also important to remember that distance learning can never replace the quality and equity LPS can deliver in person, so that is not our goal. We will continue to recalibrate our expectations, remain flexible and not let distance learning become too stressful for our students, families and staff. What’s most important is to focus on our physical health, our mental health and our well being. Please don’t worry that your children will “fall behind.” When we return to school in the fall, we will course-correct, meet our students where they are and move forward.

We understand that measures need to be put into place to protect the health and safety of our communities. While we are all disappointed that we will not be able to participate in those momentous end-of-the-year celebrations together the way we prefer to, we will continue to look for alternatives. We are also discussing ways for students to safely retrieve their remaining belongings from school. There are still so many questions that need to be answered as we navigate the months ahead. We will be sending you updates when they become available.

LPS Cancela las Clases Presenciales por el Resto del Año Escolar

Estimadas Familias de LPS y Miembros de la Comunidad:

Hoy temprano, varios superintendentes de los distritos escolares del área, incluido yo mismo, tomamos la decisión colectiva de mantener nuestras escuelas cerradas a las clases presenciales durante el resto del año escolar 2019-2020. El factor clave que llevó a esta decisión es los consejos de los líderes de las agencias locales de salud pública de que el impacto de COVID-19 es probable que aumente durante la última semana de abril. También sabemos que el virus continuará representando una amenaza significativa durante un período de tiempo desconocido después de su pico. Eso significa que ya no es posible regresar a la escuela esta primavera.

Carta conjunta de los superintendentes

El miércoles, el gobernador Polis anunció que las escuelas permanecerán cerradas hasta fines de abril. Sin embargo, los superintendentes creemos que terminar este año escolar a través del aprendizaje remoto es una de las formas más efectivas en las que podemos hacer nuestra parte para evitar exponer nuestra comunidad a riesgos innecesarios y proporcionar estabilidad para el aprendizaje. Esta decisión también proporciona a nuestras familias cierta certeza sobre el resto del año escolar, sin saber las respuestas concretas sobre exactamente cómo y cuándo volveremos a la "vida normal".

La enseñanza a distancia de LPS continuará por el resto del año escolar. Nuestros maestros y líderes escolares continuarán garantizando contenido de calidad para sus hijos. Según pasen los días mejoraremos el aprendizaje a distancia. También es importante recordar que la enseñanza a distancia nunca puede reemplazar la calidad y la equidad que ofrecemos con clases presenciales, eso no es nuestro objetivo. Continuaremos recalibrando nuestras expectativas, siendo flexibles y no permitiendo que la enseñanza a distancia se vuelva demasiado estresante para nuestros estudiantes, familias y personal. Lo más importante es centrarse en nuestra salud física, nuestra salud mental y nuestro bienestar. Por favor, no se preocupe de que sus estudiantes "se retrasen". Cuando volvamos a la escuela en el otoño, corregiremos el curso, evaluaremos a los estudiantes y avanzaremos a partir de están en su aprendizaje.

Entendemos que deben implementarse medidas para proteger la salud y la seguridad de nuestras comunidades. Mientras estamos decepcionados por queno podremos participar junto con ustedes en esas celebraciones tan importantes de fin de año de la manera que preferimos, seguiremos buscando alternativas. También estamos analizando formas para que los estudiantes recuperen de manera segura sus pertenencias restantes en la escuela. Todavía hay muchas preguntas que necesitan respuestas a medida que pasamos los próximos meses. Le enviaremos actualizaciones cuando estén disponibles.
