LPS Honors Veterans

Annually, Littleton Public Schools honors the dedicated veterans who have so bravely served this country by hosting events and activities in observance of Veterans Day. On Wednesday, November 11th, students, staff, parents and community members from across the district joined together to continue this rich tradition of honoring the many veterans within the community.

Among the many celebrations throughout LPS schools, Runyon Elementary School was honored to host Heritage High School teacher Jason Whitehorn, who served as a Major in the United States Army. Whitehorn served in Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Noble Eagle and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He spoke to students, parents and community members about his experiences abroad, including: the pain of having to say goodbye to family members upon deployment; the challenges of adapting to a new country and a new culture; and the importance of forming relationships with leaders and community members in the villages where he was stationed. Whitehorn shared one story about how he and his troops formed a connection with locals through a game of pick-up soccer during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Runyon also honored more than twenty other veterans who attended the celebration that morning.

Peabody Elementary School also hosted special student presentations throughout the day. First Grade students, dressed in white shirts with American flag ties, sang patriotic songs and honored veterans with poems, thanking them for their service. With flags from each branch of the military as a backdrop, veterans rose to address the audience and to share when and where they served. Peabody’s hallways were aglow with red, white and blue and special projects honoring the many veterans of this country. Their main hall had student-made American flags hanging from the ceiling above the buffet set up for veterans who attended the celebrations.

Littleton Public Schools is grateful to the men and women who have and continue to serve the United States.
