Board scheduled to take action on recommended graduation requirement changes at March 13 meeting

The Littleton Public Schools Board of Education continued its conversation regarding graduation requirements at its regularly scheduled meeting Thursday, February 27, 2025. The Board heard from the LPS Learning Services Team and discussed possible changes to Board Policy IKF Graduation Requirements: specifically, increasing the number of credits required for graduation from 22 to 24. The proposed changes would begin with the Class of 2029 (this year’s 8th graders).

The Littleton Public Schools Graduation Requirements Workgroup, composed of teachers, principals, counselors, and administrators, has focused on these five major outcomes:

  • Improving post-secondary matriculation rates (helping more students successfully transition to college and/or career pathways).
  • Moving all students closer to the Colorado Higher Education Admission Recommendations.
  • Ensuring 100 percent of students are prepared to pursue meaningful post-secondary opportunities.
  • Providing educational experiences that are just as competitive and rigorous as those in other metro districts.
  • Aligning graduation requirements across LPS high schools.

Over the past 16 months, the Graduation Requirements Workgroup has:

  • Gathered input from research, articles, guiding documents, and other Colorado school districts.
  • Engaged in a panel discussion with students, college counselors, and workforce representatives.
  • Gathered stakeholder input through community open house events, email and phone communications.
  • Surveyed students, parents, and staff members regarding their priorities as well as their views on possible changes to LPS graduation requirements.

These data were shared with the LPS Board of Education during graduation requirements workshops on January 23, 2025 and February 13, 2025.
