Annual Hour of Code Event Engages Over 600 Attendees

The Hour of Code, which took place at EPIC Campus on Monday, January 27, 2025, brought over 620 of the community’s brightest young minds together for an evening of exploration and hands-on learning activities specially curated for students of all ages. The event was designed to provide exhilarating activities that engaged students with principles like computational thinking, basic coding syntax, and algorithmic sequencing.

A photo taken in the EPIC Campus Great Hall looks down on hundreds of attendees facing a stage on the left side of the photos. The event coordinator, wearing a green tshirt, is speaking to the crowd from behind a podium.

The most popular stations included drone soccer, which gave students an opportunity to see how the marriage of computer science and aerospace concepts can create fun and entertainment; the Sphero Room and SAM Labs, which allowed students to gain experience with basic coding principles; and the library tables, which were packed to the brim as the community explored the computer science-related activities they can pursue in our public library’s makerspaces.

Nick Schuster, LPS's library services specialist and coordinator of the Hour of Code event, said the primary outcome of the event was that the hands-on activities would spark a new interest and passion for computer science. The opportunity for students and families to explore EPIC Campus while learning from student volunteers and engaging with them in all manner of STEAM activities hopefully inspires more students to pursue meaningful futures through one of the EPIC Pathways.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to families who attended, student volunteers, EPIC Campus for hosting, and the LPS Foundation for providing grant funding. The Hour of Code was an event to remember!
