School Safety

Due to police activity in the area and under the direction of the Littleton Police Department, several LPS schools were placed on “Secure” as a precaution: Powell Middle School, Littleton Academy Charter School, Heritage High School, Euclid Middle School, Options, Runyon Elementary, East Elementary, Transition Services, and the Education Services Center. This happened around 2:00 this afternoon. School and district administration, security personnel and school resource officers immediately responded to ensure student and staff safety.

The police activity had nothing to do with our schools. Students were safe, and the school day continued as scheduled inside the schools. By 3:25 p.m., the “Secure” had been lifted at all schools.

As a reminder, a “Secure” is initiated when there is a concern OUTSIDE the building, often a situation that is taking place in the neighborhood close to the school. Outside doors are locked, students and staff who may be outside return to the inside of the school, staff increase their situational awareness, and the school day continues as normal inside the school. During a “Secure”, no one is permitted to enter or leave the school in an abundance of caution, and this protocol was followed today.

We thank our partners in local law enforcement for their timely and appropriate action in our area today.  We also thank our students and staff for their quick response; they knew exactly what to do. Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we work together to keep our students safe.
