At its regularly scheduled meeting October 12, 2017, the Littleton Public Schools Board of Education approved school year calendars for the next two school years. Both calendars continue to reflect the Board’s values around school year calendars, which have been shaped by the community over time.
Proposed calendars for 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 were brought by the district Calendar Committee to the Board for consideration at the September 28, 2017 Board of Education meeting. The Calendar Committee includes a cross-section of parents and LPS employees.
As part of its process, the Calendar Committee:
- Reviewed the Board of Education’s calendar values;
- Identified calendar variables and factors to consider;
- Reviewed instructional year calendars for 2016-2017 and 2017-2018;
- Reviewed Colorado Department of Education requirements for instructional minutes;
- Reviewed background information related to Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and the scheduling of weekly PLC time;
- Discussed implications for the state assessment program required by the Colorado Department of Education;
- Discussed implications for Advanced Placement (AP) exams and International Baccalaureate (IB) exams in May; and
- Reviewed general and specific parent and staff input related to the calendar development.
The two calendars brought forth for the Board’s consideration reflect the Committee’s recommendations:
- To continue to support the current Board Calendar Values;
- To continue to end the fall semester prior to winter break and to end the spring semester prior to Memorial Day;
- To continue the practice of a full week break the week of Thanksgiving;
- To prioritize scheduling no more than one shortened day in any given week.
