Dr. Justina Ford Day

Happy Birthday, Dr. Justina Ford!
January 22 would have been Dr. Justina Ford’s 150th birthday, and the Denver community will be holding a free, two-hour virtual celebration at noon to honor her. This event is hosted by the Black American West Museum and Heritage Center, and will be streamed live at bawmhc.org. The Dr. Justina Ford Elementary School community created this video to be included in this celebration.

The celebration event will include a recreation of Dr. Ford’s only known interview, and the letter she wrote to the Colorado Medical Society documenting her delivery of 7,000 babies over the span of her 50-year career will be on display publicly for the first time.

Dr. Justina Ford Day in Colorado
In addition to this celebration honoring Dr. Ford, Governor Polis has issued a proclamation declaring January 22, 2021, and every January 22 hereafter, “Dr. Justina Ford Day” in Colorado.

“We chose an amazing woman to name our school after!” said principal Teresa Burden.
