Jim Stephens, LPS Board of Education member, was named a recipient of the McGuffey Award from the Colorado Association of School Boards at the October 24th LPS Board of Education meeting. The McGuffey Award honors unique board members who bring committed and passionate service to their board work. Nominated by a fellow Board member, Jim was honored for his committed and passionate service to LPS.
Jim’s nomination read: “Jim Stephens has been an advocate for public education not only for LPS but statewide for over a decade. He constantly thinks about the impact of our decisions both inside and outside our boundaries. Before being elected, Jim served on most district-wide committees, including those for capital improvement, finance, education technology, safety and mental health, immersing himself in the broad picture as well as the details of LPS. Jim bravely suggested it was time to start rebuilding schools before he was a board member and then supported the concept when he was elected. He was deeply involved in the budget and was a strong advocate for students and staff at the state level. He engages the Board in tough conversations regarding equity across our district and is passionate about alternative pathways for student success. LPS is a better place because Jim served on the Board. We will miss him.”
