LPS Update Regarding Coronavirus

Littleton Public Schools continues to work with our local public health agencies as we monitor the global outbreak of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19).  This update provides further information on district efforts.

Out of State Travel

In an abundance of caution for student and staff safety and to limit the potential spreading of the COVID-19 virus, LPS is cancelling school sponsored out of state and international student and staff travel until further notice.

General School Guidance for all Levels, Students, Staff and Volunteers

  • One of the most effective strategies to stay healthy is to practice good hand hygiene.
  • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • If soap and water are unavailable, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol to clean hands.
  • Stay home when sick.
  • Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue.
  • If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve, not your hands.

Hand Washing Protocol and Guidance

In a focused effort to prevent the spread of germs and the COVID-19 virus, LPS is establishing a hand washing protocol for all elementary schools.  Early childhood centers, preschools and School Age Child Care programs will adhere to their already established hand washing protocols and add additional hand washing aligned to the elementary protocols.  All secondary schools will continue to reinforce good hand hygiene.

Elementary Hand Washing Protocol

  • Handwashing with soap and water is expected.
    • Students will wash their hands upon arrival at school.
    • Students will wash their hands before snack and lunch.
    • Students will wash their hands after recess.
    • If soap and water are unavailable, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol to clean hands

Cleaning Practices

Enhanced cleaning practices are in place in all of our schools and facilities to help avoid disease transmission.

The custodial staff uses a general disinfectant on all hard surfaces and high touch areas on a nightly basis, in addition to routine environmental cleaning procedures (such as vacuuming, emptying trash, mopping, etc.).

Should there be a confirmed exposure, LPS has specific cleaning protocols that will be implemented.

If a Child, Staff, or Volunteer is Ill

As always, we encourage anyone who is feeling ill to stay home, especially if they are experiencing the symptoms referred to in the district guidelines posted on our website.

Student Absences

Families know what’s best for their children and we will honor your decision to keep your child home from school during this time.  Absences will be excused. Please contact your child’s school if you will be keeping them home. Teachers are unable to provide individual, alternative assignments.

Guidance on Quarantines or Closures

In the case of a major Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, LPS would follow the Tri-County Health Department’s guidance on any quarantines, closures, or other health measures needed. Our priority is always on ensuring the safety of students and staff.

Thank you for your support of Littleton Public Schools.
