Dear Littleton Public Schools Parents and Guardians:
As you may be aware, teachers across Colorado are attending rallies at the Colorado State Capitol later this week to call for increased education funding. Many districts in our area decided late last week to close school on either Thursday, April 26 or Friday, April 27.
We have been monitoring teacher absentee requests carefully over the last few days. As of today, teacher absences in LPS for this coming Friday, April 27, have increased significantly. We will be unable to provide adequate substitute teacher supervision to ensure student safety and productive learning that day. Therefore, Littleton Public Schools is cancelling all classes for Friday, April 27, 2018. (Charter schools will communicate with their parent communities individually.) While no students will attend school, it remains a work day for all LPS employees, and any employee absence must be taken according to district policy.
The LPS Board of Education and I have been working closely with legislators throughout this legislative session for solutions that restore education funding to our schools and ensure our students and our educators receive the supports they deserve. We sincerely appreciate the hard work our legislators are doing on our behalf. That being said, there is more work to be done to provide adequate funding for public schools in Colorado. All voices play a vital role in this effort.
Please know the decision to cancel classes is never taken lightly. We recognize that this presents challenges and inconveniences for many of our families, and for this we apologize.
If we have adequate numbers of staff available, elementary School Age Child Care programs will remain open all day on Friday, April 27. Students must be registered in the SACC program to attend, and parents must contact their school’s SACC program no later than the end of the day on Tuesday, April 24 to request a full day of child care for Friday. SACC will notify parents no later than the end of the day on Wednesday, April 25 regarding their ability to provide child care on Friday, April 27th. Program participation will be at the full day rate. To clarify, if you had already signed up for childcare on Friday, April 27, given this change, you must still confirm your needs for childcare no later than the end of the day tomorrow.
At this time, we expect all high school athletic competitions to take place on Friday, April 27 as scheduled. However, please look for news from your child’s school about any athletic/activity postponements or cancellations. Because we have not yet needed any snow days this year, we will not have to make up this school day later in the spring.
Thank you for your understanding and support.
Sincerely,
Brian Ewert
Superintendent
