Important Information About This Spring’s CMAS Tests

As you may have seen in the local news recently, school districts continue to ask our state officials to suspend many state-mandated assessments scheduled for this spring in an effort to protect in-person instruction.

It’s important for our families and our community to understand that we do not believe the results of the assessments this spring will have much validity or any real reliability in this COVID learning environment. We also know that for these same reasons, many LPS parents will opt their children out of these assessments, further reducing the overall validity and reliability for any school rating or the district’s rating as a whole.

At the time of this letter, our state officials are contemplating asking for a waiver from the federal government on state assessments. Closer to home, the LPS Board of Education passed a resolution in support of suspending the above mentioned CMAS assessments for Spring of 2021 during its February 25, 2021 Board Meeting.

What this means for parents and students

  • Unless a change is made at the state or national level in the coming weeks, schools will be required to administer CMAS tests. Therefore, LPS must move forward with plans to administer all CMAS tests as currently required by law.
  • Families always have the ability to opt their children out of state assessments.
