The LPS Secondary Schools 1:1 Initiative provides middle and high school students Chromebooks for use at both school and home. As part of this, the Chromebooks utilize the LPS Internet filter, even when not on the LPS network (i.e, at home or elsewhere).

Because of this, however, when LPS students login to the Google Chrome browser on their personal computer using their LPS login, the filter is also applied. That’s not a problem when they are at school (since our network also applies the filter), but can be disconcerting when a student is using a computer outside of school and a website is blocked by the LPS filter.

There are two easy ways to remove the filter when outside of the LPS network.

  1. Logout of the Chrome browser. Note this is not the same as simply logging out of your Google account in the browser, but logging out of the browser itself. You find this in the Settings menu, then Disconnect your Google Account.

The only downside to this is that you will then not have access to any bookmarks or extensions that are attached to that Google account (they will still be there when you log back into the browser).

  1. Use a different browser. The filter will only happen within the Chrome browser itself. So, for example, you could remain logged in to your google account in the Chrome browser, but use Firefox or Safari or any other browser and you will not be filtered.

On a personally owned Chromebook, please use your “Guest” mode to login to the ChromeBook, then simply login into Google with your LPS credentials. Your content will pull up within the browser; you are not subject to LPS content filter.
