As you are probably aware, AHS was "closed" over the summer as bond work was done on the building. As you return, you may wonder what exactly happened that required the building to be closed off for more than 10 weeks. While there are a few obvious things you will notice (new room number signs, new clocks, new fixtures in some bathrooms), the majority of the major work done on the building is not visible (yet very important). This includes (but is not limited to) the following:

  • repairing and replacing damaged pipes that were original to the building. (Many of these pipes were over 50 years old and were dangerously close to causing some major issues.)
  • repairing and replacing heating and cooling units around the building. (This will result in large energy savings and more uniform temperatures throughout the building.)
  • replacing the security, fire alarm, and data networking systems in the building. (All the cable for all these systems in the entire building was replaced.)

While you may not be able to see all of these improvements, you hopefully should feel the effects. For example, just looking at the data networking, the network backbone has improved from 100Mbps to 1Gbps to facilitate more connected devices, such as doors, clocks, cameras and, of course, more computers. WiFi throughput has improved from 54Mbps to 1Gbps, an approximate increase of 18X.  At the same time, the number of access points has roughly doubled, with each classroom provisioned with a WiFi radio designed to hold 100 concurrent connections. There will undoubtedly be a few glitches at the beginning of the year as we work out the kinks but, once that happens, our network should be much more robust than it was previously (and it was pretty good previously).
