On Monday, December 17, 3-4:30, Lenski teachers met to further understand dyslexia. They participated in a simulation and awareness workshop: Experience Dyslexia - A Learning Disabilities Simulation. Developed in the 1980s by the California Department of Education and updated by the International Dyslexia Association of Northern California, the six stations simulate reading, listening and handwriting tasks that students perform each day.

The experiences give you a sense of the difficulties students with learning differences often face. As many as 15-20% of the population as a whole have some of the symptoms of dyslexia, including slow or inaccurate reading, poor spelling, poor handwriting, and confusing similar-sounding words or problems with written expression.

These experiences were taxing for staff and resulted in great conversations. The simulations were followed by a discussion of dyslexia, what it is, signs and symptoms and how we can support students and families.
