1st Grade

Welcome to first grade!

Here are some of the amazing things that take place during students' years in 1st grade!

In reading, first graders read a variety of grade-level texts including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and short stories. Students are taught many 1st grade phonics skills using the Orton Gillingham approach, as well as the Superkids literacy curriculum. In writing, classes complete informational, opinion, and personal narrative writing pieces. In math, students build numbers sense. They also practice solving addition and subtraction problems including word problems using various different strategies. First graders also learn about shapes, time, money, place value, measurement, and data during their math time. In science, we learn all about animal adaptations, habitats, parents & their young, and how they communicate. We then complete a science unit about the Earth, Moon, Sun, and stars. In the spring, 1st graders will learn all about plants. Students also complete a social studies unit about holidays and traditions that take place all around the world!
