We know that each and every student needs to be ready and available to learn. Every classroom invests in ensuring that students have the social emotional skills they need to be a good friend, listen to others, show empathy, be respectful, practice responsibility, and more.
Second Step is a research based curriculum that allows classrooms opportunities to explicitly teach social-emotional learning. Topics in each grade level include Skills for Learning, Empathy, Emotion Management, and Problem Solving. Lessons include role playing skits, videos, and catchy chants to remember in a pinch.
We also highlight a Life Skill of the month. These are skills that we all need to be productive members of society, such as respect, perseverance, self-control, and integrity. A school wide assembly recognizes students in each class who have exemplified that certain skill. We love seeing our Tigers shine and acknowledging what special people they are!
