Academic Programs

Powell has grade level classes for 6th, 7th and 8th grade core academic subjects: language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. We have differentiated learning opportunities for all levels of learners: enrichment and acceleration in mathematics and language arts; interventions and support provided for reading, writing and mathematics. Powell also has a comprehensive and inclusive program for students with a variety of special education needs.

Special Features

  • Powell offers the broadest array of Exploratory/Elective programs in the South Metropolitan Area including: Gifted and Talented Seminar, Spanish I and II, vocal, orchestra and instrumental music along with guitar, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics), physical education and health, foods/sewing, yearbook, electronic publishing, digital media, photography, 2D & 3D art, environmental science, woods and metal tech., service learning and more.
  • Powell offers CORE Plus and tutorials to enrich learning opportunities in a small learning environment (approximately 20 students) in all curricular areas. CORE Plus is similar to a homeroom type class setting.


  • Powell competes in intra-district athletics for Grades 7 & 8 and currently holds 9 of 12 championships. Powell offers the opportunity for intramural competition in Grade 6. Athletic offerings include: Track, Wrestling, Basketball and Volleyball.

Co-Curricular and Enrichment Activities

  • National Junior Honor Society, Student Council, Brain Bowl, MathCounts, Art Club, Sewing Club, Spelling Bee, TSA club, Chess Club, Soccer Club, Jazz Band, Dungeons & Dragons Club, Magic: The Gathering Club, Kickball Club, Breakfast Club, SAGA Club, Puma Prowl (all school run), 8th Grade Washington D.C. Trip.
    • Opportunity to create new clubs each year
    • Clubs are created based on student interests, under the support and supervision of a willing staff sponsor

School Focus

  • Powell has a strong academic focus on critical thinking and problem solving skills across the curricula as each pertains to 21st Century Literacy.
  • We have a dedicated emphasis on intentional, cross-curricular design to extend learning beyond the classroom walls reinforced by our 1:1 Chromebook initiative.
  • Powell has high expectations and standards for behavior, including student and staff training in Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS).
  • Our staff participates in extensive training to deliver the most robust Sources of Strength program along with Trauma Informed Care and Responsive Education.
  • We have a highly trained and committed staff; nearly all have earned advanced degrees.
  • We are focused on building responsible, motivated learners in a caring environment.

Powell follows a rotating schedule, allowing students to see their teachers at different times during the day. This ensures students have the opportunity to succeed in all their classes; a student who struggles with early morning classes does not always have their most difficult class first thing every morning.
