Social Studies

Our social studies time is an exciting time for students to question, study, and discuss.  Are units of study are based in the Colorado Academic Standards for Social Studies.  You might find us creating our own maps to take a walk around our neighborhood, visiting the Littleton History Museum, Colorado History Museum, Georgetown Mine, or studying current events.  A field trip to Young Ameritown allows fifth graders to spend a day as doctors, journalists, police officers, accountants, and mayor - all while they practice balancing their checkbooks and helping customers.

Trully, social studies is a time when we can guide students to think critically about overarching essential questions that will appear for them again and again.  These include:

  • How has the world changed and how might it change in the future?
  • How can I make a positive difference?
  • Whom do we believe and why?
  • What are the roles and responsibilities of government?
  • Can an individual make a difference?
  • How does "where" I live influence "how" I live?
