The Metropolitan State College of Denver Teacher in Residence (TiR) Program is a dynamic, rigorous, and growing program that includes professional coursework, seminars, observation, and in-class coaching, designed specifically to help someone learn to be a quality teacher.
The Colorado General Assembly recognized that many school districts faced a shortage of teachers and often struggled to find qualified persons to teach their students. As a result the General Assembly passed legislation that permits persons with experience in areas other than public school teaching to teach under the State regulations for Teachers in Residence. Metropolitan State College of Denver (MSCD) initiated a Teacher in Residence program (TiR) in August, 2000, which serves candidates hired by participating school districts to teach in one of their schools. The TiR program is for two years. During both years the TiR candidate is a full time teacher and a full time student. The TiR candidate attends classes at MSCD and learns how to be an effective teacher. In the second year the candidate will receive a Professional License for teaching in Colorado, provided they have met the State regulations for the Professional License.

TiR Candidates Must

Have a baccalaureate degree with a major or equivalent in the subject to be taught.
Secondary teachers must have 30 semester hours of college credit in the primary subject they teach and 24 semester hours in any other subject they teach. Elementary teachers must have 30 semester hours of college credit that cover the major areas of Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies.

Have passed PLACE OR PRAXIS exam specific to the teaching assignment
Upon obtaining a teaching contract, candidates may enroll in the Teacher in Residence Program at Metropolitan State College of Denver

Tuition and Grading
Complete tuition is $4,590. MSCD TiR students are eligible to apply for financial aid. Through agreements with member districts tuition costs will be payroll deducted monthly.
Thirty hours of course credit are awarded at the end of the second semester. Criteria for grades includes regular attendance, completion of all class assignments, participation, and demonstrated proficiency on selected performance-based benchmarks from Colorado Standards for Teachers through satisfactory completion of a Teacher Work Sample and selected portfolio artifacts. Full year participation is required for a credit to be awarded.

Colorado Department of Education Performance Based Standards for Colorado Teachers:
Standard One: Knowledge of Literacy: The teacher shall be knowledgeable about student literacy development in reading, writing, speaking, viewing and listening.
Standard Two: Knowledge or Mathematics: The teacher shall be knowledgeable about mathematics and mathematics instruction
Standard Three: Knowledge of Standards and Assessments: The teacher shall be knowledgeable about strategies, planning, practices, assessment techniques, and appropriate accommodations to ensure student learning in a standards-based curriculum.
Standard Four: Knowledge of Content: In addition to being knowledgable in literacy and math, the elementary teacher is knowledgeable, in the following content areas: civics, economics, foreign language. Content area teachers shall be knowledgeable in literacy and mathematics and expert in their content endorsement area(s).
Standard Five: Knowledge of Classroom and Instructional Management: The teacher is knowledgeable about classroom practices in order to successfully manage time, communications and record keeping procedures that will support and enhance student learning.
Standard Six: Knowledge of Individualization of Instruction: The teacher is responsive to the needs and experiences children bring to the classroom, including those based on culture, community, ethnicity, economics, linguistics, and innate learning abilities. The teacher is knowledgeable about learning exceptionalities and conditions that affect the rate and extent of student learning and is able to adapt instruction for all learners.
Standard Seven: Knowledge of Technology: The teacher is skilled in technology and is knowledgeable about using technology to support instruction and enhance student learning.
Standard Eight: Democracy, Educational Governance and Careers in Teaching: The teacher recognizes the school's role in teaching and perpetuating the democratic system. The teacher knows the relationships among the various governmental entities that create laws, rules, regulations, and policies that determine educational practices
