Federal rules and regulations require schools to determine the language(s) used by students and others in their homes. This information is essential for schools in order to provide meaningful instruction for all students. If you indicate a language other than English on the attached form , schools are required by law to assess your child's English proficiency with the Colorado English Language Assessment (CELA) placement test. Based on the results of this test, your child may be offered services in the English as a Second Language (ESL) program and will be classified as an English Language Learner (ELL). These students are assessed annually with the CELA proficiency test until they meet the criteria for English fluency.
