Scott Murphy began his position as Superintendent of Littleton Public Schools July 1, 2006. Murphy is a strong leader with a long history in education. He served as Assistant Superintendent of Business Services/Chief Financial Officer for LPS for 16 years.
Prior to joining LPS in 1990, he served as the executive director of finance and auxiliary services for the Brighton Public School district for six years and the budget director for Aurora Public Schools for three years. From 1978 to 1981, Murphy worked at the Colorado Department of Education and was responsible for coordinating Colorado’s youth employment and education activities and prepared internal and state-wide program evaluations. Murphy has a Master’s degree in public administration from CU – Boulder and a Bachelor’s degree in social work. From 1975 to 1978, he served as a social worker in Boulder and Larimer counties where he coordinated youth employment and training programs and managed a youth treatment facility for emotionally disturbed adolescents.
Murphy has represented school districts in statewide leadership positions as the Chair of the School Finance Task Force for Colorado Senate-House School Finance Interim Committees, President of the Colorado Association of School Executives (CASE), and chair of the CASE Legislative Committee. He currently represents public school employees on the Public Employee Retirement Association (PERA) Board of Trustees.
Over the years, many have turned to Murphy for his expertise. For example, in 2003, the state treasurer used many of LPS’ accounting practices and procedures as a model for how school districts across the state should track their finances.
